US aerospace giant Boeing has reported a banner year in 2014 for aircraft sales, breaking records for new orders and deliveries.

Boeing said it booked 1,432 net orders for commercial aircraft last year, with a list price value of $US232.7 billion ($A251.77 billion), topping its 2007 previous record.

The company's backlog of unfilled orders climbed to 5,789, also an all-time high.

For the second year in a row, the company said it had delivered a record number of airliners, at 723, as it stepped up production.

Boeing's European rival Airbus holds the industry record for annual orders, at 1,503 in 2013. As of November 30, Airbus said its 2014 orders totalled 1,031 aircraft.

Dow member Boeing shares were down 1.2 per cent at $US127.49 in a broad sell-off on Wall Street.
