A person has been taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition after an incident near the city's Terrace Tunnel.
The tunnel was briefly closed in both directions, and drivers were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
It is expected that the tunnel will reopen early.
A police spokeswoman said earlier she could not comment on the nature of the incident, other than to say police are attending and the road is closed.
