Wellington is gearing up for a royal arrival this afternoon.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to jet off from Sydney and make their way to the capital for the start of their four day trip here.

The royal couple are flying into around 3pm, and MetService says they can expect clear skies when they arrive.
Wellington's mayor Justin Lester will welcome them alongside the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.

He says he's excited to meet them.

"They're of a similar age to me. I understand the difficulties they face in the public life and the great job and community service they undertake in their roles as royals."

Tonight, a reception celebrating 125 years of women's suffrage is one of the first events on the Duke and Duchess' agenda.

Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy is hosting the couple at Government House in Wellington.

She says most of the country's women MPs will be at tonight's reception.

"That will be a lovely opportunity to meet the royal couple, and I think perhaps the Duchess will say a few words."
