The servicemen and women of the First World War still influence today's defence force.

Celebrations have started to mark the 100 years since New Zealand declared war on Germany.

Air Vice Marshall Kevin Short says it's important to recognise the dedication and sacrifices of WWI.

"If you look at our uniform people today I believe we have that same spirit in our people in New Zealand."

There was a huge amount of kiwi pride being fired during a one hundred gun salute this morning.

Joshua Walker was one of the gunners marking the centenary of New Zealand's entry into the first world war.

He says he was blown away by the level of public support at Wellington's waterfront.

The army gunner says it was overwhelming seeing thousands of people watching the gun salute.
