A new initiative aims to come up with transport solutions that are broadly accepted by all Wellingtonians.

Let's Get Wellington Moving has been launched which aims to provide solutions to all major traffic problems, not just specific areas.

The first phase is six weeks community consultation.

Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson said it's a different approach, consulting with the public from the start.

"This is something that should have happened a long time ago, which is to go back to the first principles of what it is that Wellingtonians want from their city in terms of transport and how do we come up with a solution that is broadly accepted."

Mr Robertson said the problem in the past has been that NZTA has come up with a ready made solution and said you have to take it.

"It's taken a long time to get to this point but I hope that this is a genuine process where the views of Wellingtonians are heard."
