Fran Wilde has announced she will step down as Chair of the Greater Wellington Regional Council.
It comes just days after the Local Government Commission announced it was canning its draft proposal for amalgamation in the region.
Fran Wilde has been a strong supporter of a Wellington super city.
She says it's appropriate for the council to have leadership that is not so strongly identified with the rejected amalgamation proposal.
Fran Wilde will step down at the end of the month, giving councillors time to decide who they want to take over.
She will remain a councillor, and says as the issue of local government re-organisation is still very much alive, it will allow her to be in a positron to speak out unfettered by being Chair.
