The cause of the smell of smoke in a Wellington CBD building has been found.

Fire crews have worked out the smell in the Knigges Avenue building was coming from a lift motor room.

12 fire trucks attended the scene off Vivian Street and all floors of the four floor building were full of smoke.

There are no reports of injuries and surrounding buildings are not at risk.

One fire truck will remain at the building.
