It's hoped a new CCTV monitoring centre will help a two-pronged approach at derailing crime around Wellington train stations.
In the three months since its inception, 330 incidents have been captured by the region-wide Rail Monitoring Centre at Johnsonville.
The centre involves real-time monitoring of 660 cameras at nearly all Wellington stations.
Police district manager Inspector Mike Hill says it captures crime in the act, and can also prevent it happening in the first place.
"It's that ability that people know they're being monitored, that the bad behaviour isn't tolerated and it deters people from assaults, damage or thefts."
