Updated 11:24am: Updated Nelson police have identified the man killed after being struck by a car on Sunday night.

40-year-old German national Thomas Kochwasser had been living in New Zealand for sometime.

His family have been notified.

Mr Kochwassuer was hit by a car on the Moutere Highway as he was standing beside his parked van.

Police are still trying to establish what he was doing on the dark stretch of road .

The driver of the car was unharmed and is receiving counselling.
