The Whangarei District Council has named its new Chief Executive.

Current Environmental Protection Authority CEO Rob Forlong will replace the council's controversial CEO Mark Simpson, whose contract the council has decided not to renew.

Mr Simpson was strongly criticised by the Employment Relations Authority for sacking his assistant during council elections, after she nominated a mayoral candidate.

Mr Forlong will take his place in July.
