New Zealand-based Liverpool fans have reacted to news of Mohamed Salah’s shock departure.

The 33-year-old has one year left on his contract but has reportedly reached an agreement to leave the English football club in the next 10 weeks.

“This is the first part of my farewell,” Salah said in a video posted to his online accounts.

“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.

“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not part of this club.”

The announcement of the decision by Liverpool’s greatest Premier League goal scorer has rocked fans worldwide.

Liverpool Supporters Club NZ chairman Peter Carroll said the Egyptian will go down as a club legend.

“It’s always sad to see such amazing players leave the club but it’s great to see him leave on his own terms with the dignity and style he has shown over his time with Liverpool,” Carroll said.

“We wish him all the very best for his future.”

Rob Shirlow, of the Hamilton branch of the Liverpool Supporters Club NZ, told the Herald: “All good things come to an end.

“Salah’s light has been waning for a little while but it shone so brightly for us for so long.

“The moments and seasons he gave us will live long in the memory. ‘Legend’ is tossed around easily these days but Mo is definitely one, a cultural and football icon that we were lucky enough to have at LFC.”

Other members of the supporters club felt it was the right time for the Egyptian to move on, including Angela Gillam.

“There have been rumours before and they were just that but my reaction was always, Noooooooo!” Gillam said.

“But now it seems okay, he has served us well and holds heaps of records, good luck to him on whatever he does next, so long as it’s not in the Premier League.”

Fellow fan Jo Moar said she was “gutted” with the decision but felt it was the right time for Salah to go.

“He will be missed,” Moar said.

Other supporters focused on how he was able to improve the quality of the team during his time in Liverpool.

“He set himself very high standards of play and fitness and it seems he realises that he has lost a yard of pace and is not playing to the high standards he sets himself,” Derek Greenly of the Liverpool Supporters Club NZ said.

“We’ll miss his smile and he will always be respected as one of the best.

“To quote the Liverpool motto, he will never walk alone.”

It is unclear where Salah will play next, but it is likely New Zealand-based Liverpool fans can see him in action against the All Whites at the World Cup on June 22.
