Controversial rugby union player Israel Folau is rumoured to be considering a tilt at politics. 

Folau is reportedly weighing up running for the Senate in Queensland under the banner of billionaire Clive Palmer's political party. 

Folau, who played for the NRL between 2007 and 2010 before switching to AFL and then Rugby Union, was terminated by Rugby Australia in 2019 for his views on same-sex marriage and homosexuality. 

Earlier this year, Folau left the French Catalan Dragons and entered a legal bid to return to playing rugby league for the Southport Tigers, a third-tier Gold Coast club financially backed by Palmer. 

Queensland Rugby League refused to register Folau until he was released from the Dragons, resulting in a court bid that was supported by Palmer. 

But, just days after he was cleared to be registered by Queensland Rugby League, Folau signed a contract with Japanese team Shining Arcs for the 2021-22 season of Japan's Top League. 

After leaving the French Catalan Dragons earlier this year, Folau signed a two-year deal playing in Japan for the Shining Arcs. 

Palmer's United Australia Party would not confirm nor deny whether Folau had nominated himself for a Senate bid, with a spokeman saying no endorsements had been announced. 

The UAP closed its nomination forms on Monday, with candidates expected to be officially unveiled next week.
