UPDATED 4:47pm New rules have been put in place for buying firearms following a TV news story.

TV3's Heather du Plessis-Allan used false details to purchase a .22 rifle online.

Auckland police are investigating her actions which police minister Michael Woodhouse has called a pretty serious offence.

Police were already looking at tightening up online or mail-order firearms buying rules and they've acted today to close the loophole used by du Plessis-Allan.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister says the item on TV3's Story did plug a loophole.

John Key says as a result of the story the procedure's been changed meaning the form ordering the gun is given by the police to the gun shop rather than allowing the buyer to operate on her own.

However, Mr Key says no one's above the law and it's up to police to decide whether to prosecute du Plessis-Allan.
