Just two votes separate a pair of Hutt City Council hopefuls.

Eastern Ward candidates Roger Styles and Glenda Barratt are waiting nervously for a final count of votes.

An electoral officer has flown down to Christchurch to re-count the votes himself.

Ms Barratt has been elected onto council before but she said the closeness of this race is a first.

"Never has it been like this ever before. It's either been a straight yes you're in on the day or no you're not."

Ms Barratt said she's nervous.

"To know that you are nine votes behind one day then two votes ahead the next, and then waiting for all the informal votes and the special votes to be counted, it's pretty nerve-wracking."

Meanwhile, Mr Styles said it's democracy and he'll just wait patiently.
