Drug and alcohol testing of community offenders and those on bail is about to become law.

Parliament will tomorrow pass the first reading of legislation that will allow the practice to be put in place.

It'd see offenders and those on bail who're subject to drug and alcohol bans be tested to ensure they're following court ordered conditions.

Those who refuse such tests could be fined up to $5000 or jailed for up to three months.
