One farm sale to foreign interests has been stopped, but that doesn't mean New Zealand First is satisfied.

A Chinese company had made a bid for Lochinver Station, but has been turned down, with the Government deciding it doesn't bring enough benefit to New Zealand.

New Zealand First deputy leader Ron Mark said it might appear they've got what they wanted, but it's not good enough.

"This is a one off, what about the other 50 they signed off over the last six months?"

Associate Finance Minister Paula Bennett has been explaining the Government's reasons for denying permission for the property to be sold to Chinese owned firm Pure 100 Farm Limited.

She said the advice she's been given is that there are alternative New Zealand purchasers.

"As a consequence, when you look at jobs and increasing exports, which are of high importance, what we gave was low weighting to them (Pure 100 Farm Limited) in terms of those counterfactuals."
