"Four more years" could catch on in New Zealand, if the recommendations from a new report are adopted.
The study's come from Victoria University's Institute for Governance and Policy Studies, with input from the Office of the Clerk of the House of Representatives.
It aims to combat the inherent short-term focus of governments, which are just looking to please voters by the next election.
Among the recommendations, is the requirement the government do more long-term reporting, and for select committees to hear more advice from independent experts.
Report author Jonathan Boston says by far the most simple advice is to extend the government term from three years to four.
"New Zealand's parliamentary term of three years is one of the shortest in the developed world," he said.
"Most parliaments have a four or five year term."
