Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has left for Australia this morning to meet the nation's Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese in the pair's first official meeting since Luxon's election.
Luxon revealed during the campaign trail he had met Albanese when Luxon was chief executive of Air New Zealand and Albanese was the Australian minister of infrastructure and transport.
Political editor Sophie Trigger has followed Luxon across the Ditch and on Summer Breakfast this morning previewed his meeting with the Australian leader.
"There will be a few things to discuss - trade insecurity in the region, climate change, but really I think it's important to establish a really good Prime Ministerial relationship with Albanese."
Trigger noted Albanese had positive relationships with the Labour Prime Ministers Jacinda Ardern and then Chris Hipkins, who succeeded her at the end of last year.
Trigger reflected on a time when Ardern and former Australian PM Scott Morrison appeared more tense towards each other.
Ardern had called out Morrison's decisions around 501 deportees at the time.
"You'd think Luxon would want to send a message that the Government has changed, but nothing's really changed in terms of New Zealand's relationship with Australia," said Trigger.
"A lot of the tensions that existed between previous Australia and New Zealand leaders while Ardern was Prime Minister have largely been resolved, so those citizenship rights for Kiwis in Australia and the 501 deportees, so in a sense there isn't as much for the two to disagree about.
"We can expect positive outcomes from Luxon's first trip as Prime Minister."
The Herald reported this morning that 501s and citizenship struggles won’t dominate the leaders' meetings, unlike previous discussions between transtasman leaders.
Instead, their conversations will have a heavier focus on security in the Pacific and how New Zealand and Australia can boost economic co-operation - a central priority of Luxon’s engagements with the world.
The pair are expected to exchange gifts and make brief remarks in front of media before holding a private meeting. They will later appear for a joint press conference.
