John Key's continued defence of his relationship with attack blogger Cameron Slater is fuelling speculation one has something over the other.

The blogger records his phone calls.

Green co-leader Russel Norman's questioning whether he's taped something that the Prime Minister doesn't want made public.

"I'm not saying blackmail, I'm saying how do you explain why John Key doesn't just ignore Cameron Slater - it's inexplicable really," Norman says.

"One possible reason is he's frightened of what Cameron Slater might have recorded in those telephone calls."

Meanwhile, Slater's Whaleoil blog has been named the country's best at the NetGuide Web Awards.

Slater picked up the same honour last year, and was a finalist in 2012.
