The Prime Minister has carried out the first request made of him by the American President elect Donald Trump.

John Key phoned Kiwi golfing legend Sir Bob Charles last night and wished him all the best from Mr Trump as requested during their first telephone call this week.

Mr Key said Sir Bob was chuffed that he was a topic of conversation between the two leaders.

"I dutifully carried out the instructions of president-elect Trump and gave Bob Charles a ring and he was utterly thrilled he was a major topic of conversation.

"He said that he had played on Trump's golf courses around the world."

And he doesn't think Mr Trump's win shocked the 80-year-old golfer, who corresponds with the soon-to-be American leader.

"Nah - funnily enough he said he'd been following the election quite closely and he could see why quite a number of the messages that Donald Trump had where resonating so I don't think he was that surprised."

Sir Bob said it was an interesting phone call to receive, but he can see why they might have discussed him.

"I don't think Donald Trump knows a whole lot of New Zealanders, and being a known golfer I suppose it could have come up in conversation.

"Donald Trump is a very keen golfer. He's enthusiastic, a good player. Although I haven't had the pleasure of playing with him just yet, I would look forward to that in the near future."
