Parliament has voted down the Food in Schools Bill first put forward by former MP Hone Harawira.
The Members' Bill, since picked up by Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei, aimed to provide fully state funded breakfast and lunch schemes into all decile one and two schools.
However it's been defeated 61 votes to 59 - a result that hasn't impressed Ms Turei at all.
"Tonight hungry children are being failed by 59 National MPs who are saying no to the faces of hungry kids."
