Some of the country's politicians have given their maiden speeches in Parliament.

Here are a couple of offerings from inside the House of Representatives.

TODD MULLER
National

Being a parliamentarian is a dream come true for new National MP Todd Muller - although he originally had his sights set a little higher.

In his maiden speech, the Bay of Plenty MP thanked a salesman who convinced his parents to buy him a set of encyclopaedias in 1978.

Mr Muller said the books inspired him to want to become the President of the United States - despite the constitutional issues involved.

"I even wrote a book as a 10-year-old that saw me elected vice president, become president upon the very unfortunate death of the then-president and then go on to serve 13 consecutive terms."

MARAMA FOX
Maori Party

The Maori Party's new MP has come out swinging at those who want to see Maori seats abolished.

In an impassioned maiden speech, Marama Fox said that day will come - but only when there's no longer disparity between Maori and other New Zealanders.

"When Maori are recognised as value added to our country and not merely entertainment fluff to be rolled out for special occasions, when we can converse in Te Reo Maori without need of a translator - then we can remove the Maori seats."

JAMES SHAW
Green Party

A revolution rally cry's been offered by the Green Party's newest MP - who says he won't tow the party line for the "purpose of political theatre".

With a background in sustainable business, James Shaw says he'll work with anyone in Parliament to find enduring solutions to challenges facing the country.

That includes holding companies to account for what he calls "eco-cide" during his lifetime.

"In just those 41 years, fully half of all of the planet's wildlife has been extinguished.

"We know that the cause is economic and the solution is political."
