The Associate Transport Minister has moved to quell concerns that the country's about to slow down on the roads.
A tool used by the NZTA called Mega Maps says the speed settings on 87 percent of our roads are too high, and only five percent are suitable for the 100kmph speed.
Julie Anne Genter says the tool will be used to improve the safety of our roads.
"What we are using the tool is to understand where we should be engineering up the roads. We have a $1.4 billion programme of safety improvements across thousands of kilometres in the network over the next three years."
She says that cutting speeds will be rare.
"We're just looking at the most dangerous of the low volume roads and those roads that have strong community approach for a speed review, and it's not a blanket approach, so it would depend on what type of road it is and what the safe and appropriate limit is."
