The Government is set to announce plans to build more housing on existing state housing sites.
Social Housing Minister Amy Adams is to make a pre-Budget announcement in Auckland on the issue today.
Bill English said the announcement will essentially outline the next stage of the Government's plans for the government-owned housing estate.
He's signalling intensification of state housing on existing sites will be a feature, something he says can be achieved under Auckland's unitary plan.
"A simple way to think about it is the Government owns land that has currently got 27,000 houses on it, in Auckland," Mr English said.
"And there's room under the Auckland Unitary Plan to build 60,000 houses on that land and the Government won't need them all."
Elsewhere, some fix-it funding may be about to come the way of a damaged Manawatu walking track.
Minister of Conservation Maggie Barry is to visit the Manawatu Gorge track tomorrow to make a pre-Budget announcement.
Part of the 10 km-long track was closed for some months after a major slip last year took out a bridge and caused substantial damage at the track's eastern end.
It's expected some of it will be about funding support for the track, but other announcements are also expected to be made.
