Updated 2:35: Walaa Ahmad said he, his wife and three children fled the fighting in Syria in 2011.
He says they made it to Beirut, but he was unable to make enough money to provide for his family.
Translated from Arabic, Mr Ahmad spoke of the relief he felt when he heard he was coming to New Zealand.
"It's exactly like releasing someone from prison, the feeling was as if I was released from prison."
Immigration Minister Michael Woodhouse has tough words for anyone opposed to refugees coming to New Zealand - learn about the issues involved.
83 Syrians from an extra refugee intake are among the people who've just just been welcomed to New Zealand at the Mangere Refugee Centre.
Mr Woodhouse said it's important to look after such vulnerable people.
"There will always be those who are biased by their own fears, apprehensions and bigotry, but I think New Zealand has a proud reputation of hospitality and of welcome."
New Zealand's first intake of refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria are taking part in an introduction course at the Mangere Refugee Centre in Auckland.
The refugees vary in age, speak varying levels of English, but all were grateful for the chance to start a new life.
The Immigration Minister Mr Woodhouse and the head of Immigration New Zealand personally welcomed them.
They also heard, through a Syrian representative, that they tried to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, but weren't able to find the peace they find here.
Chief Executive of Immigration New Zealand Nigel Bickel told the refugees the aim is for them to feel at home here.
"It is our hope that you will be able to build a new life in this country and pursue the hopes and aspirations and dreams that you have for yourselves and your families," he said.
The refugees will now head to their new homes throughout New Zealand.Â
