There are power outages in parts of Whitianga this afternoon.

The town's been battling surface flooding today, with the main road in and out of town being closed earlier.

Thames Coromandel District Council Civil Defence Controller Gary Towler said it's still raining, but things don't appear to be getting worse.

He said there are power outages in the northern part of the town in Milo Bay, Kennedy Bay, Port Charles and Port Jackson.

Towler is warning the power could be out for some time.

One lane of Kennedy Bay Road is closed after a slip.
