Contractors have stabilised the slip around the Wairoa Bridge on State Highway 2 caused by last week’s weather system.
Tauranga was doused with 147mm of rain, well above its monthly average of 98mm, as the sub-tropical storm passed over the country Thursday and Friday.
The Wairoa Bridge slip was assessed by geotechnical experts on Friday and the attached cycleway was closed.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said today contractors had carried out temporary response works to stabilise the slip and protect affected underground services
“Contractors worked through the weekend to complete the initial mitigation measures,” a spokesperson said.
“The highway remains open and is being closely monitored. It is safe for traffic to continue using the route.
The cycle path will remain closed until further notice while assessments continue.
