A supply issue affecting Vogel’s has left Auckland shoppers scrambling to find substitutes for the popular loaf.

Grocery shoppers across the city have noticed the iconic Kiwi bread, which comes in varieties including mixed grain, dark rye, sunflower and barley, and fruit and spice, missing from shelves over the weekend.

“Due to a production issue, Vogel’s bread will be out of stock until further notice from the supplier,” a notice attached to empty bread shelves at Woolworths Point Chevalier read.

The note thanked customers for their understanding and apologised for the inconvenience.

A Woolworths NZ spokesperson said: “Auckland stores were impacted by a supply issue of Vogel’s bread on Sunday, March 8.”

Woolworths NZ said it expected the issues to be resolved by tomorrow, thanking customers for their “support and patience.”

The details of the production issue that has led to the shortage have not been disclosed.

Vogel’s manufacturer, Goodman Fielder, has been approached for comment.

Vogel’s will celebrate its 60th birthday next year.

Founder Johan Klisser, who died in 2022 aged 95, was a Jewish refugee who escaped the Netherlands following World War II.

He produced the dense-textured bread in his Auckland bakery in 1967 and it has since become a Kiwi staple.

The standard 750g loaves sell for $5.19 on the Woolworths online store, with the gluten-free offerings selling for $8.39.
