There is frustration as violent drunks continue to clog up Emergency Departments across the country.

A study published in the Medical Journal of Australia yesterday shows shows 8.3 per cent of those in Emergency Departments in New Zealand are there as a result of alcohol fuelled violence.

The figures were the same back in 2014.

Australasian College for Emergency Medicine New Zealand Chair Dr John Bonning said something needs to change, it's a waste or resources.

"It's more the frustration of dealing with these intoxicated people when they're perhaps elderly or young children with illness/injuries that is slightly less self inflicted.

"The public needs to be made aware of the problem, the enormity of the problem. We are trying to minimise harm to people".
