Another man remains in Middlemore Hospital in a serious but stable condition with an arm injury after the shooting which happened in Papakura.
A 28-year-old man charged with the alleged murder will appear in the Manukau District Court on Monday.
Neighbours on his street say he was a humble man who looked after his friends and family.
They were unsure if the incident was gang related but said he had affiliations with Black Power.
Meanwhile Detective Senior Sergeant Rod Honan of the Papakura CIB today assured the public the shooting, with a sawn-off shotgun which police have possession of, is not gang related.
Â
"We [have] recovered a sawn off shotgun that we believe was used in the alleged incident, and we are also working with the whanau and victim support," Honan said.
Herald reporter Susan Strongman was at the scene, which is still cordoned off by police.
"I spoke to three young men at the scene who said that one of the people shot was a very close friend of theirs, they said that another man has been shot in the shoulder and a third person fled the scene."
People living near the scene of a shooting in South Auckland early this morning said it's quite normal to hear rowdy drinking sessions in the park nearby.
Ms Strongman talked to a local who heard a commotion just after one this morning.
"He heard men shouting aggressively and he did say that he heard somebody in distress, he also said that he heard a loud bang that could have been gunfire."
Earlier Newstalk ZB talkback caller Kevin described a significant police presence in the area for several hours after the shooting.
"You can't get into Central Park which is directly opposite the police station, there's quite a lot of police out there they've got their lights flashing and they've got they're rifles out.
