DB breweries has announced a new development at the Tui brewery site in Mangatainoka.

Thirteen full time and 11 part time jobs will be lost when a new smaller brewery is built and completed by May next year.

DB's Matt Wilson said the development, which includes earthquake strengthening of the iconic Tui Tower, shows they're committed to Mangatainoka in the long term.

"We think this is the best solution to safeguard brewing onsite, to make sure Tui tower stands for generations to come and to see the site used as well as it can be."

He also said the workers who will lose their jobs, have had mixed reactions to the news.

"There's definitely a bit of emotion there," he explained, "This is a team that's poured their blood, sweat and tears into that site for many years."
