A travel expert says long traffic delays to and from Auckland Airport are affecting the country's international reputation.
With visitor numbers into the country soaring, transport authorities are fast-tracking a number of projects to ease congestion.
Colliers New Zealand hotel director Dean Humphries said Auckland's traffic woes are leaving many visitors with a negative first impression of the country.
"We are starting to sees signs of people's frustration coming out in the media, including social media, and so it is certainly something that I think, as a country, we need to address; particularly because we're marketing ourselves as a high-end, high-value destination."
Mr Humphries said he believes the problem will only get worse before it gets better, and believes a rail link needs to be considered.
"I really do think that rail needs to be back on the agenda, because most international gate way cities do have a rail network to and from the airport."
Meanwhile, airport chief executive Adrian Littlewood thinks the raft of measures aimed at easing traffic delays to and from Auckland Airport appear to be working.
Mr Littlewood said recent adjustments have seen traffic flowing more freely.
"There's been some changes to intersection configuration, changes to intersection management that are already having a positive impact on flows into and around the airport."
