Police have named the man who drowned at an East Cape beach yesterday as Tamahou Wanoa of Wellington.
The 53-year-old was free diving with family and friends at Puatai Beach near Tolaga Bay when he was caught up in a rip.'
He was able to be pulled to shore by locals but was dead by the time the Gisborne rescue helicopter arrived on the scene.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
