Updated 12.13pm: The teams that the British and Irish Lions will play on their tour of New Zealand in 2017 have been announced.

New Zealand Rugby's announced Eden Park will host two All Blacks tests against the British and Irish Lions in 2017.

The first and third test will be in Auckland, while Wellington will host the other test.

The five New Zealand Super Rugby teams will play the Lions, as well as the New Zealand Maori in Rotorua and a provincial union team in Whangarei.

The only games south of the capital will be against the Crusaders and Highlanders in Christchurch and Dunedin respectively.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew says they can't host a Lions test at the current AMI Stadium in Christchurch.

"It's simply not up to this level of fixture. And it would be a considerable struggle for Dunedin to cope with the logistics of the hordes of fans travelling."

Meanwhile, the venues for the rest of the All Blacks home calendar in 2016 and 2017 have been confirmed.

Wales will play three tests next year in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.

The Wallabies will play in Wellington, the Springboks in Christchurch and Argentina in Hamilton in next year's Rugby Championship.

The additional Bledisloe Cup in 2016 will be staged at Eden Park.

After the Lions series in 2017, Dunedin will host the Wallabies, Argentina will play in New Plymouth and South Africa at North Harbour Stadium.

The All Blacks' last game in the Taranaki region, against France in June 2013, drew a sell-out crowd of 23,000.

The match injected $4.5 million into the regional economy.

Sports Minister Jonathan Coleman said the economic benefits of the tour will be felt across the country.

The last Lions tour in 2005 brought 20,000 supporters into the country, and Dr Coleman expects a similar number this time around.

The tour follows this year's hosting of the Cricket World Cup and FIFA Under 20 World Cup.
