A fire at a playground in Christchurch is being treated as suspicious.

At around 7.30 this morning, emergency services were called to the Burwood playground on New Brighton Road, where they found a fire at the base of a climbing frame.

Fire communications shift manager, Andrew Norris says while they were able to easily put out the fire, the frame did sustain some damage.

He says it's currently unusable and they've contacted to Christchurch City Council telling it the frame shouldn't be used.
