There's support for companies which offer prepay systems and other options for buying power.

The Federation of Family Budgeting Services says many clients go into a state of shock when a bigger bill than usual arrives, as can happen over winter or when a house is busy.

It says it knows of many examples of families choosing between feeding their children and paying for power.

The federation applauds special discounted rates for Community Service Card holders and prepay options like Mighty River Power's Glo-Bug.
