A vehicle fire has closed State Highway 1 north of Whangarei.

SH1 at Towai, between Hūkerenui and Waiomio, is closed in both directions while emergency services respond.

A police spokesperson said the blaze was reported about 11.55am and delays were expected.

“People are also advised to avoid the area until the scene is cleared.”
