Skypath opponents accused of scaremongering

Opponents of Auckland's Skypath are being accused of scaremongering, with claims the path could be the site of stampedes.

Resource consent has been granted to build the footpath and cycleway across Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Some opponents are now accusing commissioners of ignoring the risk of stampedes on the path, and creating a four-metre-wide kilometre-long "death trap".

But Transport Blog editor Matt Lowrie said the number of people on the bridge would be strictly controlled.

"There's not going to be a stampede across there, there's not going to be people killing people like they've suggested," he said.

"It's quite frankly ridiculous."

Matt Lowrie said the claims just didn't stack up.

"The numbers we're talking about are perhaps a person every 20 or 30 seconds," he said.

"We're not talking thousands of people turning out in a minute."

The Skypath is expected to improve North Shore's access to the central city.

However, opponents have concerns about Auckland Council's offer to underwrite the private path's operational shortfalls.

Some are considering appealing the resource consent through the Environment Court.
