The Governor-General is recovering in hospital, after undergoing heart surgery this morning.

A problem with Sir Jerry Mateparae's heart was discovered during a routine medical check last month, so he scheduled a valve replacement.

He's staying in hospital for a few days, before going back to Government House to recuperate.

Dame Sian Elias is taking over his constitutional duties until December 15th.
