Updated 5.52pm: A severe weather warning has been lifted for Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island.

Regardless, Police are warning motorists to be wary of surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Localised downpours with rain rates of 25-35mm/hr may still occur.

Rainfall of this intensity can cause flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.

Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

Police are reminding motorists of the need to exercise caution, maintain safe following distances and to keep their speed suitable for the conditions when driving in severe weather.

MetService Forecaster Erick Brenstum says there's a possibility of small tornadoes especially on the East Coast.

Mr Brenstum says it's important for the public to keep up with the latest weather warnings.
