Auckland councillors have voted decisively to introduce a seasonal ban on controversial set-net fishing at a northern beach.

Omaha Beach residents and north Auckland local boards have been lobbying the council for years, seeking a ban on set-net and crab-pot fishing at the beach.

Seasonal bans have already been introduced at Army Bay and Te Haruhi Bay in Shakespear Regional Park.

They've have accepted set-net fishing is popular with Pacific communities and is a customary practice for some local Maori.

They've also considered concerns from set-net opponents, who say hidden nets can be dangerous for swimmers paddle boarders, kite surfers and boaties.

Set-nets will be banned at Omaha from Labour Weekend to Easter Weekend this summer, and the policy will be reviewed again next year.
