One person is dead following a serious crash on a Waikato highway early this morning.

Police were notified of the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 2, near Coxhead Rd, Mangatarata, around 6.30am.

Police initially said there appeared to be “serious injuries”.

In an update just after 8am, a police spokesperson confirmed one person had died.

“A second person has reportedly sustained moderate injuries.

“The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene. Motorists should continue to avoid the area.”

Diversions are in place at the intersection of SH2 and SH25 to the north, and SH2 and SH27 to the south.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said an ambulance, one road manager and a helicopter were sent to the crash scene.

They assessed one person in a moderate condition.
