A motorcyclist has died after a serious crash in Ashburton this evening.

The crash happened at the intersection of Hinds Arundel and Gills Rds.

Police were notified of the two-vehicle crash, which involved a car and a motorcycle, about 6pm.

The motorcyclist was found dead at the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit are in attendance, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.

Police said motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible and expect delays.
