The Selwyn District Council is calling for better alignment with its neighbouring district Christchurch City when it comes to their respective freedom camping bylaws.
Selwyn conducted their own research which showed many people working and visiting Christchurch are freedom camping in Selwyn.
They've spent more than $2 million over the past three years maintaining freedom camping locations.
Mayor Sam Broughton says they need to work collaboratively when reviewing their bylaws.
He says tourists usually consider the Canterbury region as one space rather than separate districts so its important there is framework there that is clear, as they don't have that right now.
Broughton will be addressing the issue among others at Christchurch's Long Term Plan submissions hearing this morning.
