A bargoer has been left with a broken jaw after a security guard punched him in the face outside a nightclub on Auckland’s Karangahape Rd that had been evacuated by fire.

Before the assault, patrons of G.A.Y bar were ushered out onto the street after a fire broke out in the basement of the club at around 1.40am.

Video footage of the attack shows the security guard walking over to Aaron Gordon and speaking to them for about five seconds before suddenly punching them in the face.

A loud cracking sound can be heard as the upper cut punch connects with Gordon’s face, causing them to fall to the ground. The security guard is seen walking away after the assault.

The victim, Gordon, was left with a broken jaw as a result of the punch, which will need an operation to repair.

“We were kind of having an argument, he was being really aggressive, I told him he shouldn’t be so aggressive.”

Gordon said they had a verbal altercation with the security guard, but claims the violence was unprovoked.

Auckland Central Police confirmed they received an allegation of an assault yesterday afternoon.

“This assault is reported to have occurred at around 1.45am outside a nightclub on Karangahape Rd, on 23 November.

“As a report has just been made, police will now be assessing this report for further follow-up enquiries,” a police spokesperson said.

Anyone who has additional information or footage can update police online or call 105 using the reference number 251125/8000.

G.A.Y bar owner Wayne Clark claimed Gordon was an ex-employee who was being a nuisance on Sunday morning.

“He’s a disgruntled [former] staff member who was heavily intoxicated, trying to get into the club and causing a massive scene at the entrance. And unfortunately, there was a bit of an altercation.”

The Herald understands that the security guard has claimed Gordon threatened to kill him. Gordon said they do not remember this happening.

The security guard’s employer, Black and White Security owner Chris Yates, told the Herald he was aware of the situation but wouldn’t comment on whether he condoned his employee’s behaviour or if he had stood him down.

Regarding the claim that Gordon threatened to kill his employee, Yates said: “That’s true, but again I’d leave it up to the police to investigate.”
