The RSA is dismissing people who wear military medals they haven't earned, as 'wannabes.'

Today's Herald on Sunday has revealed an Auckland man, a builder named Rob Clark, wore service medals from around the world, and an SAS beret, during Anzac Day events.

But the Defence Force says while the man was in the Army, he was never in the SAS, nor was he ever posted overseas.

RSA president BJ Clark said it's easy to spot an impostor, especially in New Zealand, as they often wear a mixed assortment of medals.

"New Zealand has a small defence force, and a lot of people know each other. [Imposters are] often caught out because they wear the wrong mix of medals and you can see that they conflict."

Mr Clark is also said to have worn a "Who Dares Wins" badge alongside the mix of medals which came from places such as Kuwait, Iraq and the Solomons.

He also displayed an American medal for extraordinary heroism.
