A branch of the RSA has scratched plans to have a Muslim prayer at an Anzac Day service because of the threats it's received.

There was major opposition from veterans to the suggestion for a Muslim prayer at the dawn service in Titahi Bay.

Organiser Simon Strombom decided to move it to the 10am civic service but has now done away with the idea completely, because of the nature of the threats made.

Strombom, who is a former army major, says he's gobsmacked at the reaction.

Stombom says he simply can't guarantee the safety of speakers at the event if it went ahead.
