A rider on a stolen motorcycle has been arrested after weaving through oncoming traffic during rush hour in an attempt to evade police.

Auckland Police Inspector Kerry Watson said a motorbike was stolen on Tiki St in New Lynn at 7.25am.

Watson said officers patrolling Avondale spotted the bike on Granville Dr a short time later but when the driver saw police, they sped off.

Police did not follow the bike on the roads, instead they used the Eagle helicopter to track the bike from the skies as it began to race across Auckland.

“The rider has sped across Auckland at dangerous speeds, at times crossing over on to the wrong side of the road and into oncoming traffic,” said Watson.

The getaway ended and the rider fell off a short time later and was taken into custody by police.

There were no reports of injuries or crashes as a result of the incident.

Watson said charges were likely.
