Murray Ball is being remembered for using a clever mix of humour and satire in his cartoons.

The Footrot Flats creator has died at the age of 78 after six years of poor health.

He lived in South Africa with his family for a time, then opposed the 1981 Springbok tour when he returned to New Zealand.
New Zealand Herald cartoonist Rod Emmerson told Rachel Smalley he was able to drip feed satire and his background in political cartooning, into the strip.
"He did it very poignantly too. I was looking back last night through a lot of his work and he got away with an awful lot."
Emmerson said Murray Ball captured the essence of New Zealand farm life.
