Nau mai haere mai ki te Wiki O Te Reo Māori.

Today marks the start of Māori Language Week, which aims to raise awareness about the long term future of Te Reo.

This year's theme is Kia ora te reo Māori - Let the Māori Language live.

The Maori Language Commission is predicting non-Māori speakers will be a minority in a generation

Commission CEO Ngahiwi Apanui says 300,000 young people are learning Te Reo in pre-school or school, while 10,000 learn it at a tertiary level, and he expects these numbers will double in the next 20 years.

Apanui predicts that growth will continue until Māori speakers of Te Reo are outnumbered by non-Māori.

The capital gets the official proceedings underway at 11am, with a parade from the Cenotaph to Civic Square.

To coincide with te Wiki O Te Reo Māori, a version of the hit Disney musical Moana has been re-dubbed into Maori and will be released tonight.

The original English version starred Hawaiian actor Dwayne Johnson and grossed over $600 million worldwide.

The casting call for the re-dub went out in June for Maori speaking voice actors, with Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, and Oscar Kightley reprising their roles.

Twelve-year-old Jaedyn Randell from Waikato plays Moana, while Māori Television newsreader Piripi Taylor plays Maui.

Māori Television's Makere Edwards says it's looking good from what she's seen.

"It's going to be a great movie," she said. "We've all seen the little clips and heard the different voices and there's some amazing talent that have been utilised for that film."
